Garda Vetting for Creche Staff: Rules and Renewal Explained
Last updated: July 2026
Garda vetting is the single most scrutinised item in your staff files during a Tusla inspection, and one of the most common non-compliance findings. These are the rules for Irish early-years services.
The essentials
- Who must be vetted? Anyone carrying out relevant work with children: childcare staff, students on placement, and regular volunteers, under the National Vetting Bureau Acts 2012–2016.
- When? Before the person starts work. Starting someone while vetting is processing is a finding waiting to happen.
- Does vetting transfer? Generally no. A new employer normally needs a new application.
- How long does it last? There is no statutory expiry, but sector practice is to re-vet about every 3 years. Check current Tusla guidance for your service type.
- How do you apply? Through the employer or a registered relevant organisation via e-Vetting. Individuals cannot apply for themselves.
What inspectors actually check
- A disclosure on file for every staff member, dated before their start date.
- Vetting for students and volunteers, not just employees.
- Re-vetting on the schedule your own policy promises.
- Overseas police clearance for staff who lived abroad for significant periods.
See the Children First training requirements guide and the childcare compliance checklist. TinyOrbit tracks Garda vetting dates and alerts you before the re-vet date.
